Irene (Pettijohn) Carney, 101¾, the oldest resident of New Haven, went home to be with Jesus on Monday, March 24, 2025. She was born on July 23, 1923, in New Haven, IL to the late George and May (Austin) Pettijohn.
Irene was married to the love of her life, the late Vane Carney, for 52 years. She was a hard worker, worked until the age of 87, cleaning homes with her niece, Dorothy McGhee. She was well know for her delicious home cooking, and she loved sharing it with others. She loved having visitors, even if you surprised her by just stopping in. She enjoyed life and always had a smile on her face. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was loved by all and will greatly missed.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband Vane, 2 sons, Eugene and William "Bill", 2 sisters, Flossie and Olliebell, 2 brothers, Edward and Earnest, a daughter-in-law, Debby Carney, and a great-grandson, Eli Carney. She is survived by a son, Glen Carney, grandchildren, Alex (Amber) Carney, Adam (Leslie) Carney, Cynthia (Dwayne) Burnette, and Troy (Kristie) Carney, and numerous great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at Cox & Son Funeral Home in New Haven, IL from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM. Funeral service will start at 1:00 PM, burial will follow at Union Ridge Cemetery.
