Betty Louise (Atkins) Cox, a cherished member of the Ridgway community and a beacon of love and kindness, peacefully departed this life on March 9, 2025, surrounded by her loving family and friends at her home. Born on January 5, 1929, in Waltonville, Illinois, to the late Ralph & Lucille (Maddox) Atkins. Betty was a woman of remarkable spirit and dedication, who left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered.
In December 1949, alongside her beloved husband, A. Charles Cox, they opened Cox & Son Funeral Home in Ridgway, establishing a legacy of compassion and care for those in need during their most difficult moments. Her nurturing nature extended beyond her career; she served as a dispatcher for the Fire Department and the Ambulance service of Ridgway for over 30 years, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to her community. Betty retired in 2013, leaving behind a profession that had defined much of her life with service and grace.
Betty's personality was a beautiful blend of strength and warmth. She married the love of her life, A.C., on December 25, 1947, a partnership that blossomed into many loving years together. Although A.C. and their children, Sandy Prather and Tony Cox, have since passed away, their memories live on through Betty's enduring strength and the legacy of love she built.
A cherished member of the First Baptist Church of Ridgway, Betty served as chairman of the Flower Committee for an astonishing 50 years. Her devotion to her faith and community was evident in her countless contributions and the friendships she cultivated over the years. Those who knew her enjoyed gatherings filled with laughter, card games, and the joy she brought to every occasion.
Betty is survived by her loving son-in-law, Brent Prather, and daughter-in-law, Gayla Cox. She leaves behind a vibrant family that includes six grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren who know her as Beppy, along with many nieces and nephews who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Lucille Atkins, her children Sandy Prather & Tony Cox, and her siblings, Wallace (Bobbie) Atkins, Eddie (Judy) Atkins, and Carolyn “Sue” Johnson, who, like many others, were deeply influenced by her kindness and vivacious spirit.
Betty's visitation will be held on March 12, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Cox & Son Funeral Home in Ridgway, followed by the funeral service on March 13, 2025, at 11:00 AM. These gatherings will offer an opportunity for family and friends to celebrate her remarkable life and honor the love she so freely extended.
As we reflect on the joyous life of Betty Cox, we remember her not only as a devoted wife, mom, and grandmother but also as a kind-hearted community pillar whose contributions and love will endure through the ages. Her gentle spirit and fierce love will always remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her.
