Barbara A. Bagwell, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and educator, peacefully went to be with the Lord on November 29, 2024 at the age of 96. Born on May 10, 1928, Barbara grew up with a passion for learning and helping others. She pursued her education at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL, where she graduated with a degree in Home Economics. Her commitment to lifelong learning led her to earn a Master’s in Education from the University of Chicago at the age of 40. On August 9, 1953, Barbara married the love of her life, Richard S. Bagwell. Together, they shared 51 wonderful years of marriage until Richard’s passing on August 10, 2004. Barbara’s life was centered on her family, education, and faith, leaving an indelible mark on everyone who knew her.
Barbara is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard, and her daughter, Maureen Leah Miller, who passed away on January 11, 2020. Maureen was married to Gary Miller of Chicago, IL. Barbara is survived by her son, John Alan Bagwell, and his wife, Bonnie (Simpson) Bagwell, of Alpharetta, GA. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Alex Heath Bagwell and his wife, Nerina (Bernal) Bagwell, of Cumming, GA, and Ellen Ann (Bagwell) Rhodes and her husband, Bryan Michael Rhodes, of Broomfield, CO. Barbara adored her great-grandchildren, Isabella Grace Bagwell and Liam Heath Bagwell, who brought immense joy to her life.
Barbara's legacy as an educator and matriarch will be cherished by all who knew her. She will be remembered for her unwavering love for her family, her dedication to learning, and her warm and kind spirit. Barbara loved to dance and enjoyed gardening, reading and visiting with friends.
A celebration of Barbara’s life will be held on December 20, 2024, 2:00 pm at Manor Lake Assisted Living, 3769 Kallie Circle, Dawsonville, GA 30534 (706-216-1333). In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in her honor to Illinois Foundation Future Farmers of America.
